We are drawn to nature not as a preference but as a need. Sky, in particular, is something the mind keeps reaching for.
Biophilic design begins from a simple observation: human beings are healthier, calmer and more focused around nature. Plants, natural materials, water and daylight are not merely pleasant, they measurably lower stress and lift attention. Of all these, the sky may be the most fundamental and the most overlooked.
A view of sky gives the mind orientation and release. It tells us the time, the weather and the size of the world beyond our walls; it gives the eye somewhere distant to rest. Deprived of it for long stretches, we feel subtly compressed, even in a beautiful room.
Bringing an authored sky indoors is biophilic design taken to its logical conclusion. Where a window offers a fixed, borrowed view, an optical sky offers a composed one, the openness of the outdoors delivered into the very centre of a home.
