The System
What exactly is a FORMAE optical sky system?
FORMAE is an architectural light instrument that reproduces the colour, softness and depth of an open sky indoors. Recessed and borderless, each installation is composed by hand and held with intent, a designed scene of daylight, not a fixture.
How is FORMAE different from smart or sensor led lighting?
FORMAE is remote directed by design. There are no motion sensors, no cameras and no automation deciding for you. Every scene is a deliberate choice you compose and hold, the way a lighting designer would specify it, not the way an algorithm interpolates it.
Is this a real skylight cut into the roof?
No. FORMAE needs no roof penetration and no sky above. It renders daylight optically, so it works on any floor and in any room, including basements, apartments and windowless interiors.
How is it different from a stretch ceiling or a backlit panel?
A backlit panel is a flat, even glow. FORMAE composes depth, direction and the graduated colour of a true sky, so the room reads as if it opens onto the outdoors rather than onto a lit surface.
Does the light have the flat, patchy quality of LED panels?
No. The light is optically diffused into a single, even field with graduated colour, no dot grid, no hot spots and no visible hardware.
Design & Commission
Can a FORMAE installation be tailored to my space?
Every FORMAE is bespoke. Dimension, proportion, the colour signature and the way light enters the room are composed for your architecture and calibrated on site.
What are the four FORMAE series?
The Ceiling Series (a full depth sky), the Wall Series (a 45° window of light for windowless rooms), the Object Series (the brass and walnut remote), and the Atelier (fully bespoke commissions).
What are FORMAE “signatures”?
Signatures are composed light worlds, from Rajasthan Gold to Himalayan Dawn, a library of Indian light you can hold in a room and return to whenever you wish.
Can I preview the light before I commit?
Yes. Our studio prepares a scene proposal for your specific room, and where possible a sample calibration, before any installation begins.
What is the lead time for a commission?
Each installation is made to order and calibrated on site. A typical commission runs eight to twelve weeks from design sign off, depending on scale and finish.
Installation
What does a FORMAE installation require?
A solid (RCC) ceiling soffit and a modest recess depth. Our studio surveys the room, integrates the system into the architecture, and calibrates the final scene on site.
What ceiling height do I need?
The Ceiling Series reads best from roughly 2.4 metres (about 8 feet). For lower ceilings, the Wall Series delivers the same authored light through a vertical window of light.
Who installs it, and how long does it take?
FORMAE is installed by our own trained team rather than a general electrician. On site work usually takes a few days, followed by scene calibration.
Will it work with a false ceiling or interiors in progress?
Yes. We coordinate with your architect and contractor so the system is recessed cleanly, and the finishing around it is handled as part of the fit out.
Can it be installed in an existing home?
Yes, provided the ceiling soffit allows the recess. Our survey confirms feasibility before we commission the work.
Wellness & Light
Does the light shift through the day like real daylight?
It can. A FORMAE scene can move from a warm morning through a bright noon to a soft dusk, but only when you choose. Nothing changes on its own unless you direct it to.
Is FORMAE good for wellbeing?
Authored daylight supports mood, focus and a natural sense of time indoors. Because you direct it, the light serves the room and the moment rather than a fixed schedule.
Does it emit UV or provide Vitamin D?
FORMAE reproduces the appearance and quality of daylight, not its ultraviolet content. It is designed for visual comfort and does not emit meaningful UV.
What happens at night?
Nothing, unless you compose it. FORMAE holds whatever scene you set, a dim, warm evening sky, or off entirely, and never switches itself on or off.
Is anything in the room measuring me?
No. FORMAE has no sensors, no cameras and collects no data, a deliberate choice for bedrooms, spas and private suites.
Ownership & Care
How do I control a FORMAE installation?
Through the Object Series remote, a weighted brass and walnut instrument designed to be held, not hidden, or discreet in room controls. The remote is the interface; the room is the display.
What is the warranty?
Every FORMAE installation carries a comprehensive multi year studio warranty on the optical and electronic system, with ongoing support and recalibration available.
How energy efficient is it?
FORMAE uses efficient solid state light sources and draws far less power than the daylight it appears to deliver. Actual draw depends on the scale of the installation and the scene.
How do I maintain it?
Almost nothing is required. The surface is cleaned like any ceiling, and the sealed system is serviced by our team, who can recalibrate a scene at any time.
What if something goes wrong?
Our studio supports every installation directly. We diagnose remotely where possible and schedule a service visit when needed.
Which cities do you serve?
FORMAE designs and installs across India’s major cities, from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad to Jaipur, Kochi, Indore and Chandigarh.
